Shawn Whitsell

Shawn Whitsell is a father, activist, poet and teaching artist. He is also an actor, writer, director, producer and casting director for stage and screen.  Shawn is the founder of the Destiny Theatre Experience and Focused Dreams Films. He has written, produced and directed a number of theatrical works including "Never Been Home," "Beyond Loose Ties," "Holidays at Mama Dee's," "Un-Sheltered," "House of Harts," "In The Pastor's Shadow," "Life To Come," "Stories of Our Lives" "Moments In Time" and "Dilemmas & Perspectives."

He has worked with a number of Nashville-based theatre companies including Nashville Repertory Theatre, Nashville Children's Theatre, Tennessee Women's Theatre Project and Street Theatre Company. Additional theatre credits include "The Watsons Go To Birmingham 1963," "A Raisin in the Sun," "The Piano Lesson," "Dreamgirls," "The Face of Emmett Till," "The Colored Museum" and "Bud Not Buddy."

When he's not performing, Shawn visits schools throughout the Nashville area, teaching poetry and spoken word for Southern Word, Inc. He also teaches drama for a number of arts institutions. In addition, he is on the board of directors for Preston Taylor Ministies and is an active member of several social justice organizations such as Nashville Organized for Action and Hope (NOAH) and Gideon's Army. He also volunteers in prisons and mentors youth.
